HYDE Irish Whiskey strikes GOLD at the World Whiskies Awards 2018 and Celebrates Launch into Russia

February 23, 2018 Profiles and Interviews

HYDE Irish Whiskey is delighted to announce that HYDE No 6 Special Reserve has won the overall category award for ‘Best blended Irish whiskey’ in the world at the very prestigious World Whiskies Awards 2018.

This accolade coincides with the County Cork based purveyor and curator of fine Irish whiskeys’ launch into the Russian market.

We are deeply honoured to be recognised by this independent expert judging panel at the World Whiskies Awards 2018 and also delighted to announce that HYDE Irish Whiskey is now available in Russia – adding our thirty-fourth export market” says Conor Hyde.

HYDE Irish Whiskey is a family of six, specialist, limited edition, Irish whiskey expressions, matured and ‘finished’ to perfection in the idyllic landscape and temperate climate of County Cork, on the Wild Atlantic way in Ireland.

Named in honour of Ireland’s first President, Douglas Hyde, HYDE whiskey casks are hand chosen with great care and are representative of some of the very finest Irish whiskey produced in only the very best Irish distilleries. Each carefully chosen whiskey is paired with extremely high quality vintage oak casks, hand sourced from some of the world’s finest bodegas and distilleries. The whiskey is then matured to perfection in casks such as Rum, sherry, or burgundy allowing the whiskey to interact with the natural cask wood for several months of ‘finishing’. This age old yet complex and natural biochemical process gives each of our HYDE whiskeys its unique character, distinctive aroma, and award winning taste.  HYDE Irish Whiskey is non-chill filtered and cut using only pure, County Cork spring water giving it a uniquely natural character.

“It’s all about the wood!” It is well recognised that up to 80% of any final whiskey taste is as a direct result of the interaction between the maturing whiskey and the wooden cask in which it is aged. This maturation process is influenced by many subtleties such as local climate and how the oak casks are stored and managed as the whiskey matures to final perfection.

Independent ageing and ‘finishing’ of distinctive Irish whiskey in bonded warehouses is a very respected tradition which has existed since the 19th century. In fact, during the 1800’s, every County in Ireland had its own uniquely tasting local independent whiskey, aged in a local bonded warehouse, with the whiskey sourced from independent Irish distilleries.” explains Conor Hyde.

The global market for Irish whiskey continues to grow, with year-on-year sales increasing by +16.3% in 2017, outpacing rivals from other regions of the world. Irish whiskey sales in the key United States grew by +12.8% to €718 million in 2017. Hyde Irish Whiskey is now represented in 34 markets, with significant presence in Continental Europe,  North America, Canada, Australia, and Asia.

Conor Hyde notes “while the UK will always be our nearest neighbour and an important market for Irish food and drink exporters, from the very start we have aimed to bring Hyde premium Irish Whiskey to the global market. As a result, we have very little exposure to the risks of BREXIT and we have been able to reach many new younger whiskey consumers in growing markets, where Irish Whiskey is capturing the attention of a new generation of whiskey connoisseurs.”
